Frequently Asked Questions

There are many reasons why people choose to come to therapy. Sometimes it is to deal with long-standing psychological issues or problems with anxiety or depression. Other times, it is in response to unexpected changes and/or stressors that seem overwhelming. Many seek the support of a therapist as they pursue their own personal exploration and growth. Working with a therapist can help provide insight, support and new strategies for all types of challenges in life.

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions and answers. You are also more than welcome to contact Jon-Elyn Murphree for more information.

Contact me! I am happy to answer any questions or concerns over a free consultation.

A 50-minute session is $120, 80-minute sessions are $160 (sometimes recommended for couples or intakes).

I do not accept insurance, but can provide you with a super-bill to submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

*Filing a claim is the responsibility of the client and reimbursement depends on your specific insurance network and coverage.

While I do understand that many seek a therapist that is in network with their health insurance, there are benefits to choosing private pay.

It allows you have the freedom to select the best therapist for you, rather than being limited to in-network providers.

Private pay therapy allows for a more personalized, flexible, and comprehensive therapeutic experience.

I am fiercely protective of your freedom to choose the treatment (and frequency of treatment) that works best for you, rather than being dictated by an insurance company.

This is totally up to you and your personal needs. Some people feel relief after just a few sessions, some people stay for 12-20 sessions, and others prefer to continue therapy for much longer. I am happy to go at your own best pace and discuss treatment options with you!

Upon meeting you and having an intake session, we can discuss scheduling based on your needs. True change comes from consistency in therapy, and I typically recommend starting out weekly/bi-weekly.

I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. Cancellations with less than a 24-hour notice will be charged for the full session.

I do offer virtual sessions to anyone in the state of Alabama. If possible, I recommend at least an in-person intake session to get to know you and fill out necessary paperwork.

I do believe that in-person therapy creates the most rich experience, however, I understand life is busy and sometimes teletherapy is needed!

I see individuals, children, couples, and families! Although my specialties are listed above, I have training in a wide variety of mental health needs. If I feel like I am not the best fit for you, I can give you referrals in the area!

I offer walk and talk sessions on the beach with established clients. Oftentimes, integrating movement and mindfulness into session can be healing. There is an additional consent process involved with walk and talk sessions. Reach out to me with any questions!

I offer a limited amount of reduced fee spots because I understand that mental health treatment can get expensive. Please reach out to me to see if I have a spot available if you cannot afford treatment, and if they are currently full I can add you to a waitlist.

In accordance with the No Surprises Act, you are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate that outlines costs of services.

While other professionals such as counselors and social workers have similar training, marriage and family therapists (MFTs) are trained on how individuals are connected to a greater whole such as their relationships and broader systems. This widens the individualistic view of therapy to attend to the role of these systems in the client's life.

Before our first session, I send you an email that includes client portal access to fill out consent paperwork. This has to be filled out prior to beginning therapy. If you prefer to fill this out on paper, please discuss this with me. You can show up to your session early to complete consent forms by paper if you wish.
